Coming attractions: GBPAC 11th season packed with music, theater and meaning
| Posted in | Posted on
May 23--CEDAR FALLS -- The Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts 11th season begins on a somber, thoughtful note and ends with a brass band.
On Sept. 16, Judy Shepard will speak in the Great Hall about making the world more accepting of race, religion and sexual orientation. Her 21-year-old son, Matthew, was murdered in October 1998 in Laramie, Wyo., the victim of anti-gay hate. Judy and her husband, Dennis, channeled their grief into forming the Matthew Shepard Foundation.
Later in the fall, "Laramie Project" and "Laramie Epilogue" will be performed by the Tectonic Theater Project.
"Every year we have a show or event that uses the arts to address issues. We try to give audiences the tools for opening a dialogue," said Steve Carignan, GBPAC executive director. Related events may include panel discussions.
The season ends April 17 with the Boston Brass. The popular ensemble is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2011 and is introducing its "Fanfares!" project for the next three season. The goal is to have 25 new fanfares written by composers across the globe.
These shows book-end a season full of music and theatrical performances. The GBPAC season will include the Four Tops and Temptations, "Legally Blonde -- The Musical," DRUMLine Live, the Blue Man Group, the Russian ballet performing "Sleeping Beauty," Johnny Mathis and "Disney's Beauty and the Beast."
Carignan predicts the Four Tops and Temptations could be "the best show of the year" because their music is so familiar to audiences, while DRUMLine Live is in the tradition of "Stomp."
"Disney's Beauty and the Beast" is one of the biggest shows the GBPAC has ever presented, Carignan said. "It's the full-blown, spectacular Disney show and it's a big break for us, too. Disney is very picky about where they send their shows and we think this could be an opening to getting other Disney shows," he explained.
Single ticket sales for all shows begin Aug. 2. An individual who purchases six shows will receive a 10 percent discount. Friends of the Gallagher-Bluedorn may purchase their tickets earlier; call 273-3660 for membership information.
